About Us

Aykua is a Cambridge-based, venture-backed startup building AI systems to automate medical administration, reducing delays, errors and manual work for clinics. We’re a lean team with significant opportunities to grow with the company.

The Role

As one of our first engineering hires, you'll own platform architecture, reliability, technical security and production operations, writing software and automation to improve how we deploy, observe and recover our systems. You'll work directly with the CTO, who agrees priorities with you, resolves decisions spanning the platform and application, and retains company-level accountability for security and compliance.

Our stack includes GitHub-based CI/CD, AWS, GCP, Terraform/OpenTofu, Nix/NixOS, PostgreSQL, event sourcing and Erlang/OTP. You don't need experience with every part, but substantial production ownership is essential.

What You’ll Do

  • Own AWS and GCP infrastructure as code using Terraform/OpenTofu, with reviewed, reproducible changes.
  • Maintain Nix/NixOS development, build and deployment environments and reliable CI/CD, including safe releases and rollback.
  • Establish monitoring, actionable alerts, runbooks and escalation arrangements; lead incident response and fix underlying causes.
  • Own backup and recovery, including tested PostgreSQL restores, and partner with the software engineer on safe application and database changes.
  • Implement and operate security controls for access, workload identity, secrets, patching and audit logging; provide compliance evidence.
  • Improve reliability, performance and recovery across Erlang/OTP, PostgreSQL and event-sourced systems, including safe replay and idempotent processing.
  • Direct coding agents through substantial engineering work with clear specifications, independent tests, review and human accountability. Provide isolated environments, scoped permissions, secure credential handling and controlled production access.
  • Use behaviour-driven development (BDD): define operational acceptance scenarios and write failing checks before implementation, using infrastructure, deployment and recovery tests to independently verify agent-assisted changes.
  • Provide deployment, observability and evaluation infrastructure for LLM and agent workflows; the software engineer owns application evaluation datasets, metrics and regression checks.
  • Manage capacity, performance, costs and suppliers; automate repetitive work and share operational knowledge.

What We’re Looking For

  • 12+ years of professional experience independently building and operating production systems, including cloud infrastructure.
  • Hands-on AWS and infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform, OpenTofu or comparable tooling.
  • Evidence of diagnosing incidents, restoring service, testing recovery and fixing underlying causes.
  • Practical experience implementing and operating production security controls.
  • Strong software engineering and automated-testing skills, including reading, debugging and changing backend code yourself and with agents.
  • Test-first development experience, turning operational acceptance criteria into executable checks; no particular BDD framework is required.
  • Sound judgement about distributed systems, concurrency, data integrity and reliability.
  • Experience with deployment automation and reproducible environments, and willingness to learn Nix/NixOS and Erlang/OTP.
  • Experience directing coding agents through substantial implementation work, from specifications and acceptance criteria to task coordination, independent testing, review and integration.
  • Ownership of outcomes: prioritising risks, explaining trade-offs, working independently and helping colleagues ship and operate systems quickly while maintaining quality, security and compliance.

Nice to Have

  • Nix/NixOS in production.
  • Running Erlang/Elixir/Gleam/OTP systems in production: deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting and performance tuning.
  • Other functional programming experience.
  • PostgreSQL design and operations, including backup and recovery; event-sourced systems, including replay, projections and recovery.
  • SPIFFE/SPIRE, OpenBao/HashiCorp Vault or comparable workload identity and secrets-management systems.
  • Applied cryptography or security architecture, including end-to-end encryption; SOC 2 (including Type II) or HITRUST controls, audit readiness and evidence collection.
  • Healthcare or EHR experience.

About Us

Aykua is a Cambridge-based, venture-backed startup developing AI systems to automate medical administration workflows accurately and efficiently. Medical admin is a huge, largely manual burden on clinics and a source of delay and error for patients; we are building the systems that make that exchange fast, accurate, and compliant at scale. We are a lean, fast-paced team with significant opportunities to grow with the company.

The Role

This role is a customer-facing developer role at the centre of our clinic portal's development roadmap. Reporting directly to our Chief Product Officer and working alongside the rest of the software development team, you will split your time between building new features and managing the product: gathering requirements from clinics, shaping what we build next, running projects and keeping our existing system running smoothly. It is an ideal role for a developer who wants more influence over product and feature design, and who enjoys working directly with customers.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop new features for our clinic portal, from design through testing and release.
  • Gather requirements from clinics and turn them into clear specifications that inform the product roadmap.
  • Manage product delivery: prioritise the backlog, plan releases and keep work on track with the development team and Chief Product Officer.
  • Maintain and support the existing system, resolving issues and keeping the service reliable for clinics.
  • Act as the main technical contact for clinics, from onboarding and training to release notes and feedback.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience, with a degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one mainstream programming language, such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, C or C++.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining production codebases that real users depend on.

You will be a great fit if you...

  • Enjoy working with frontier models.
  • Engineer for reliability and correctness, not just functionality.
  • Automate away repetitive work and build tooling that makes engineering faster and safer.

It would be nice if you had...

  • Project management experience, such as planning releases or coordinating work across a team.
  • Cloud development experience (e.g. AWS, Azure or Google Cloud).
  • Experience working directly with customers or end users.
  • Experience managing vendors and third-party suppliers.
  • Familiarity with modern web technologies.

Location and working pattern

This is a full-time hybrid role based near Cambridge, UK. You should be able to work in person regularly with the team, with some flexibility for remote work.

Compensation

Salary is expected to be in the range of £55,000–£72,000, depending on experience, in addition to equity compensation via stock options.

How to Apply

Please send your CV and cover letter to jobs@aykua.com.

Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis, and we aim to respond to every applicant within one week. You must have the right to work in the UK, as this is an in-person role near Cambridge.

AI Applied Scientist

Full-time · Hybrid · Cambridge, UK · £42,000–£60,000 + Equity (Stock Options)

View full job description

The Role

This role makes the AI systems which power our products measurably better. How well those systems perform is at the heart of what Aykua offers. You will design the evaluations that tell us how accurate they are, find out why they fail, and run the experiments that fix it. You will statistically assess prompt and model performance and maintain our internal evaluation frameworks. The role suits a scientist with rigorous experimental habits, from a PhD, postdoc or equivalent industry experience, who wants their work to ship in a product which real clinics are using today.

What You’ll Do

  • Improve how we measure AI quality: extend the evaluation frameworks for our existing products and stand up new ones as products are built, assessing prompt and model performance statistically and designing experiments that compare changes rigorously.
  • Build and continuously improve our LLM-as-judge evaluations: calibrate judges against expert human review, find where they fail, and feed what you learn back into our prompts, models and products.
  • Curate and maintain our internal evaluation datasets, working with expert reviewers to establish and keep ground truth.
  • Work closely with our product and engineering teams to turn your findings into improvements that reach production.
  • Mentor the team in evaluation and experimental practice, establish best practices, and raise the technical bar for how we measure AI quality across the company.

What We’re Looking For

  • A PhD and postdoctoral research experience, or equivalent industry experience (5+ years), in data science, machine learning or a related quantitative field.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python (with libraries like Pydantic, Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn).
  • A strong foundation in statistical analysis, experimental design and hypothesis testing, and experience applying it to large or messy datasets.
  • Experience turning analysis into working tools: evaluation harnesses, data pipelines or reusable experiment code that others on the team can run.

You will be a great fit if you...

  • Enjoy working with frontier models.
  • Would rather measure whether something works than assume it does.
  • Automate away repetitive analysis and build tooling that makes evaluation faster and more reliable.

It would be nice if you had...

  • Hands-on experience with LLMs, such as prompting, LLM-as-judge or fine-tuning.
  • Familiarity with evaluation metrics such as precision and recall, and with using them to check automated judgements against human review.
  • Experience with healthcare or clinical data, or in another regulated industry, including de-identification, privacy-preserving data work or data governance for protected data (PII/PHI).
  • Publications in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Experience using coding agents in research work, with independent verification of the results.

Location and working pattern

This is a full-time hybrid role based near Cambridge, UK. You should be able to work in person regularly with the team, with some flexibility for remote work.

Compensation

Salary is expected to be in the range of £42,000–£60,000, depending on experience, in addition to equity compensation via stock options.
